Nazaire Perrault and Demerise Simoneau

Nazaire PerraultMarie Nazaire Perrault was the grandfather of Robert Perrault and the fifth of fourteen children of Jules Perrault and Marie Consigny. He was born on 9 Jun 1859 in Montréal, Québec, Canada and baptized on the same day in the basilica of Notre-Dame de Montréal.1

In the 1861 Canadian Census for Montréal, Nazaire is listed at the age of 2 in the household of his parents, Jules and Marie, with his sister Délia who was 5 years old.2 In the 1881 Canadian Census for the Ste-Cunegonde subdistrict in Montréal, Nazaire is listed at the age of 22 in his parents’ household along with seven siblings.3

Nazaire emigrated to the United States in 1884,4 probably to seek employment, and married Marie Philomène Demerise Simoneau in Our Lady of Victories Church in Boston, Massachusetts on 8 Jul 1888.5,6 Their Massachusetts marriage registration record shows that Nazaire was a clerk and Demerise was an “operative”.
Nazaire Perrault and Demerise Simoneau -- St-Romuald d’Etchemin
Marie Philomène Demerise Simoneau was baptized in St-Romuald d’Etchemin in Lévis, Québec, Canada on 11 Jan 1864.7 She was the first child of François Simoneau and Philomène Jalbert who were married in St-Romuald d’Etchemin on 10 Nov 1863.8 François was the son of François Simoneau and Margaret Topping;9 Philomène was the daughter of Alphonse Jalbert and Rose Beaudoin.10

Nazaire and Demerise had eight children:

  1. a daughter, born 2 Feb 1889 and died 2 Feb 1889 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.11
  2. Mary Alice Perrault, born 3 Dec 1890 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts; died 2 Feb 1891 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts.12
  3. Alexander William Perrault, born 1 Jan 1892 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts; died 1 Mar 1906 in New York City, New York.13
  4. Francis Gaspard Perrault, born 27 Nov 1894 in Boston, Suffolk County, Massachusetts;14,15 married Victoria Stella Aurora Hétu on 10 Dec 1917 in Schenectady, Schenectady County, New York; married Gertrude Deyo Ostrander abt. 1927; died Mar 1958 in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey.16
  5. Joseph Toussaint Hector Emmanuel Perrault, born 11 Sep 1896 in Montréal, Quebec, Canada;17 married Jessie O’Neil on 29 Nov 1917 in New York;18 married Margaret Louise Byerly on 14 Nov 1947;19 died 23 Aug 1980 in Boynton Beach, Palm Beach County, Florida.20
  6. Henry Honoré Hormisdas Perrault, born 8 Sep 1898 in Montréal, Quebec, Canada;21 died 16 Oct 1901 in New York City, New York.22
  7. Yvonne Alphonsine Perrault, born 10 Dec 1901 in New York City, New York;23 married Léopold Beauchamp on 16 June 1923 in Hochelaga, Quebec, Canada;24 died 27 Nov 1935 in Montréal, Quebec, Canada.25
  8. George Octave John Perrault, born 5 Jun 1905 in New York City, New York.26

Nazaire and Demerise were included in the 1900 U.S. Census for Charlestown, Suffolk County, Massachuesetts with children William A. (age 8), Francis (age 5), Hector (age 3), and Antonara (Honoré?) (age 1). Both Nazaire and Demerise indicated that they immigrated in 1884 and that they had been 16 years in the United States.27

Demerise died in Manhattan on March 25, 190728,29 at the age of forty-three. Nazaire married Marguerite Foubert on September 6, 1914.30

Nazaire and Marguerite were included in the 1920 U.S. Census as residents of Brooklyn, New York. Nazaire’s occupation was listed as “reserving clerk” for a steamship company. He indicates that he became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1892.31 Nazaire returned to Montréal, probably after Marguerite’s death in 1936 in New York City, where he died on 28 Oct 1937 at the age of seventy-eight.32
