John Culp and Rebecca Vandike

John Culp, 2nd great-grandfather of Florence Mosier, was the sixth child of Leonard Culp and Elisabeth Bower (Bauer). John was born on April 9, 1786 and baptized July 14, 1786 at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Barren Hill, Montgomery County, PA.1

Around 1816, John Culp married Rebecca Vandike, probably at St. Peter’s. Nothing is known about Rebecca’s parents. However, a grave marker in the cemetery of St. Peter’s contains the following inscription: “Our Mother, Mary M. Hagy, wife of John Vandike; born 12/7/1767, died 9/25/1856; age 88 years, 9 mos. & 13 days.” It is possible that John Vandike and Mary Hagy were the parents of Rebecca Vandike.

The records of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church include baptism records for 8 children of John and Rebecca Culp: Levi (b. 1816), Mary Ann (b.1819), Elizabeth Ann (b. 1822), Charles Engle (b. 1824, d. 1826), Rebecca (b. 1826), John Andrew (b. 1828), Elmira (b. 1831), and Joseph (b. 1834).

John Culp is listed in the 1810 tax roll for Whitemarsh Township, Montgomery Co. as a blacksmith. Neither John nor Rebecca can be located in the 1850 U.S. Census, and it is assumed that both died before 1850.

Nothing else is known about John Culp and Rebecca Vandike at this time.
